When I saw Charles Freger’s picture of a Yōkai, I had to draw this beautiful creature.
Yōkai are a class of supernatural monsters, spirits and goblins in Japanese folklore. The word ‘yōkai’ means: bewitching, attractive, calamity, spectre, apparition, mystery. Yōkai are ritual figures imagined by man and embodied during festivals and ceremonies as an attempt to tame the elements and find meaning in natural events.
When I finished this cute monster, it suddenly reminded me of the movie Where the wild things are directed by Spike Jonze. So I had to add ‘I’ll eat you up. I love you so!’ : )
